Hi ho, hi ho, it’s plotting and planning I go! We’re having the yearly Geminifest (an humongous conflation of all May/June birthdays within 5 miles or 5 degrees of separation, whichever goes farther) this Saturday (woot!) and I’ve managed to get my mom to bring a bunch of the booze and meat to barbeque! Yay. Margaritas and Sangria, here I come! Oh, and I persuaded the hubby into letting it be our housewarming party as well. Well, maybe persuaded isn’t quite the right word… more like, delivered a fait accompli by inviting fifty or so of our closest friends and family (anyone reading this who feels left out, you’re invited too and I apologize for not getting you your evite in time ;-< or maybe you should have just canceled all your other plans and joined us) and then letting him know that we had substantial numbers of guests coming. What the hell - I operate better under a deadline, and the house and backyard look amazing, 'cuz he's been running around like a headless chicken painting and patching and gardening and all that stuff. (Hey, I scraped 90% of the glazier's putty off the windows in our new front door - that counts.. and besides, if we didn't give ourselves a deadline to get some of it done, it would drag on forever... and hubby needs to start taking programming classes and get a new job, so it was for his own good ;->) But he gets mucho husband points for all the cool stuff he does – I love that he’s so handy, and he’s artistic and sensitive (sometimes a downer when there’s a mood-swing in progress) and intelligent and handsome and nice (except for when there’s a mood-swing in progress). (Not that I’m expecting him to read this or anything… harrumph.) Last weekend was spent playing host to an old friend of his from high school (named Hani) who’s spent the last 15 years or so in Spain. Hani was an awesome houseguest and really great to get to know – extremely intelligent and funny, and well-traveled as his company sends him all over the world. We’re hoping to spend some time with him and his intended bride in Sevilla this September on our way to visit Ali’s parents in Lebanon. Goddess knows I could use the vacation!

Gotta give props to Matt Welch for this post (which I just stumbled across) making the point that to excuse terrorism as justified by cultural or experiential lack of something, anything, is to deny the terrorist the fundamental human dignity of being responsible for his or her actions. To paraphrase part of Welch’s comments: to buy into that “yeah, but” mentality is to beg the question of why Nelson Mandela or Mohandas Ghandi didn’t run out in the street and wage some retributive kick-ass on the white man. Wasn’t gonna go back to the political stuff for a while, but I gotta give credit for clarity and right-thinking where I find it.
